My Visual Diary - Deep Contrast

This evening I went for a walk around the reservoir which I do quite often near Plymouth University. I was looking for intersting things to take photos of using my depth of field knowledge when I came across this flower. I thought it looked very beautiful on its own with nothing behind it for quite a distance. I took the photo on my Canon 350D and I edited on photoshop making the deeper background even more blurred than original. The picture is quite statement making as the flower is very bright and stands out. It sums up the beauty of flowers by having such a big contrast against the background.

The picture I took reminds me very much of this piece by Elena Khazina. The two photos have many common points including the composition, depth of field work and bright flower colour. The composition in my piece is almost dead on centre, I tried to make this the case so that it had an equal amount of background either side. Khazina's piece is a little different as it's slightly to the right against my central piece but the flower still gets cut off on the bottom. When taking my photo, I changed the aperture settings so that the flower was in focus and the background was out. This was so that there would be more attention on the flower. Khazina's piece is similar in this way as the flower is in focus and the background is out. Both of the pieces have a bright flower head which adds more attention and focus onto it.
