My Visual Diary - Unexpected Kindness

Whenever I do a shoot in public, I always see people who I would love to take photographs of but feel like I'd be intruding on their day if I did. Whilst on the barbican walk/shoot today, I was taking photos of a wooden bench and this very kind man told me that I could take photos of him if I wanted. This was great news for me as he had quite a good, rough look to him which would look good in the photos I was taking as he fit well in the scene. When I was taking the photos I asked him to just keep doing whatever he was doing before as I wanted to get a raw photograph of a casual day. I took a few shots from different angles with him facing multiple ways as he was talking on the phone. I chose these 2 photos as my finals as I thought his facial expression in both of them added an extra something to them. The way you can tell the phonecall is real makes it so much better. I made them both black and white and blurred as much background scene as I could to make him stand out as the main feature even more. I altered the composition on both photos so that he was basically in the most of the bottom left hand corner. I thought these were probably my most successful photos from the barbican shoot and I thought it was an extremely kind thing for the man to offer to do.

When looking on the college courses pinterest board, I found this image of a woman which was taken by William Eggleston and reminded me of the piece I took of the man on the bench. The photo captures the raw emotion of the woman just like mine of the man on the phone. I thought I'd include this here to show the way emotion and facial expressions can make photos come alive and seem a lot more real.
