This morning we had a short session on abstract art and how it can create great mood and tone regardless of not neccesarily knowing what it is. We were told about a few artists who have famous pieces of work from major milestones in history which create massive impact. The first world war was a very destructive and devastating time in world history as there were over 17 million deaths and 38 million casualities. The artwork created around that time tended to reflect on the war which was somewhat impacting and upsetting.
This first piece is by Kazimir Malevich and is called 'Black Square'. The piece has often been looked at and passed off as anything but art, this is because it looks like the simplest sort of thing which anyone could do but in reality it has a lot of meaning. It was created in 1915 which was right in the time of the devastating war. The piece was created with layer upon layer of diferent coloured paints which at the end was so messy and dark it was just a black square. When seeing the artwork in person, you can see how much time was spent into the piece as theres a lot of brushstrokes. Each line can be thought of as a way of the artist trying to come to terms with each life lost in the war. In a way it was a theraputic piece of work.

The next piece is by the same artist but instead of being one black looking square, he used multiple shapes to get his point across. This piece is supposed to represent an airplane from the war. I personally can't see it very easily as the only bit resembling a plane is the red lines for a propellor. Even though I can't make out what it's of myself, I still feel what it stands for. The shapes in the piece are very bold which I think is one of the main reason this abstract piece is so strong in mood. By using multiple colours, it stays in the abstract category as it's even more random and unexpected for what it is.

Abstract Photos - Morning Task
This morning we were set a task of taking abstract photos which created mood and tone. We needed to capture the idea of something you can't make out or don't really understand which still creates deep feeling.
