The Square - Still Life In The Studio

This morning we went back to the cove studio to shoot some still life images with objects we had brought into college. We started the session by going through camera, lighting and other device settings so that we could shoot on our own at a later stage. As we were in the cove studio we had the flash lighting to work with which I found a very handy thing. As there were so many people working in such a small space, in groups we set up little areas with a piece of coloured paper for a background and made our own infinity curve so that the photographs were smooth. The group I was in had a green sheet for our background which we soon came to realise didn't go with any of our objects as we all had beauty products/jewellery. The photos were all taken on f16, a shutterspeed of 1/125 (to go in sync with the flash) and the lowest iso on a Nikon D90 which was 200. Below is a picture of a contact sheet I created when first analysing my photographs. I tend to use contact sheets as a way to view all of the shots from a shoots in one space to outline the good and bad. If there's something I want to remember about a piece or even an editing idea, I usually write one or two words to remind myself at a later point.

The photo below was the first one I took with the green background. (Until stated, all photos are unedited)

This next photo was taken when we realised none of our photographs were working with the green. We changed our set to pink as we felt it was more fitting.

This last photo is an edited version of the one above. I thought I'd give editing still life images a try as it's not something I've done before in a studio environment. As I shot in jpeg for quickness I was unable to change too much of the exposure settings but I did brighten up the backgroudn making it more statement making and pulled out some of the finer jewellery details where possible.
