Semiotics

Semiotics is the study of signs. Its what we think about when we see something specific. An example could be a heart. If you look at a heart shape you could think about love, life, valentines, muscle, organ, courage and care. On the other hand, a heart is something completely different; its arteries, veins, blood and so on. We have been trained over years to see something and think of something in particular but in reality if we were heard a specific word when seeing a picture of a certain person we would often link the two. An example of this is nicknames. A lot of nicknames are thought of when you look at someone and see something you think relates to them. As a quick example, my brothers name is Scott but his nickname is Woo. This nickname was chosen when y mum was one day watching the tv with him and an advert came on for Woo-Woo. As he was only yound he would repeat it and one day the name stuck as anytime people would see the advert, they would think of him. Semiotics can go into depths about how people perceive things and as it goes in further you can work out how to easily change something.
