Character

What is it?

The dictionary definition for 'character' is 'the mental and moral qualities distinctive to an individual'. This to me says something very bold and pretty thought provoking. An individual being or in respect even an object with mental/moral and something to represent them. It's interesting to think about in all honesty as there are nearly 7 and a quarter billion individual people living on this planet and among that there are nearly 7 and a quarter billion different characters. Within that number of people there are similarities as well as differences which all pile up to create you. We might have things in common with other people but there is nobody just like you. You are your own character and your own being. The way you were brought up to the way you earn money, the way you communicate with others to the way you spend your free time, the way you think to the way you act - it's all what makes you a unique individual.

Character is overall a very tough subject to boil down into one simple sentence, its hard to think about everything that makes up a character as the truth is, everything we live, say, believe and do make up the character that we are. Even though we think about characters as living, breathing people, objects can also have character. Inanimate objects are often thought of as just things we use to get by but they can have character also. For example, picture a flag waving in the wind, to most people it's just a flag but in reality it's an object which represents something, it's a free object representing something by the way it physically looks. I'm not say all objects have character but quite often, objects can mean a lot just by looking the way they do and doing what they do.

Character is something people try to display quite often through the way they look and the way they present themselves to others. It's a way of expressing ourselves as individuals. Some good examples of people trying to represent their character are the stereotypes we have created along with the sub-cultures we live within. Each stereotype and sub-culture has a certain way of dressing, they believe specific things and act in certain ways. Other things people do to give themselves more personality and character includes piercings, tattoos, make-up and hairstyling. Theres an illusion around it that if you wear certain amounts of make-up and hair products that you are a certain type of person which is quite peculiar really as physical things such as piercings, make-up and tattoos etc can be chosen through liking of the way they look.

So to conclude it is very hard to define what character means and what it is. It's easy reel off different characteristics which create a character but there's nothing which can define a character as every character is different and a different personality is attached to every character.
