Pass, Merit, Distinction Task

This morning we were given three completed bodies of work from students who have completed the same project. One which is pass, one merit and one distinction. We were given the challenge of deciding which one we thought was graded at what mark. I found this task quite interesting as it was very insightful to see what other people are doing around the country. I read through the three projects, jotting down notes about my thoughts on the written work as well as the experimental/physical work and made a decision on which one was pass, merit and distinction.

I decided that Sian' work was a distinction, I thought this because her research and analysis was in a lot of depth and included a whole range of techniques such as physical books, online websites and pictures and physical work of others in exhibitions etc. I thought her work was very thorough as her physical shoot work was repeated multiple times in order to experiment with different equipment, models and ideas. I found it very helpful to see what sort of things she would write alongside her shoot evaluations as I find it very hard to analyse a shoot and final images. I noticed that she went back into her research when evaluating and compared a lot of her work against researched artists. This body of work is what I'm trying to produce as I am aiming to get the highest grade which is a distinction.

The piece of work I put down as a merit was Lyndzay's. Her work was very similar to Sian' as it had a huge amount of research and practical work but a tiny bit less on the experimental side. This piece of work probably could've been graded as a distinction if the student had experiment with her idea a few more times. I feel like her research was very in depth but maybe the analysis could've been expanded a small amount.

The final piece of work was by Lucy and was a pass grade. This piece of work was much different lot he other tow as there was a lot less across the whole board. There was only a small amount of research and it was as if the student had focused on hitting the pass mark and not exceeding any further. The work she researched could've been more analytical and could've been looked into a whole lot further where her grade could've gone up. The practical work she completed was also very minimal and could be expanded a great deal with more shoots and experimental work. Something which could do with a lot of work was the way she analysed, she could've analysed her work up against other artists in order to compare and contrast.

Overall I thought this task was very worthwhile as it gave me an insight into what grades are given for what bodies of work. It gave me an idea on what I could do to improve my work and get a better grade.
